COMMUNISM!

Here's two interesting things I found in today's New Testament reading in Acts 4:23-37.

1.    The believers's prayer.  They first pray about how herod is persecuting the church even as he persecuted and killed (by God's own plan unbeknownst to them" Jesus Christ.  If WE were praying this prayer, we would pray, "Lord, keep us safe so that we can preach the Gospel message!"  They DID NOT pray this.  They prayed, "LORD, it's very dangerous out there.  But, just like with Jesus persecution, we know you are in complete control.  Therefore, let us preach your word with great boldness."  This is not, by far, a prayer for protection, but instead a prayer of TRUST, and a statement against the human propensity towards FEAR.  Sometimes we embrace our fears in our prayers, the apostles rejected them in favor of BOLDNESS in the face of persecution, and as a result, they were all filled once again with a mighty outpouring of the Holy Spirit's power.  Looks like God enjoyed that prayer.

2.  COMMUNISM!!!!  In Acts 32-27, we see communism.  People didn't consider their possessions their own, but gave to anyone as he or she had need so that ALL had some.  Historically, in communist countries, those who are ruled do not have a choice in the matter.  They MUST, as mandated by the authorities, participate.  In fact, they are commanded to do so as their patriotic duty.  Here's the difference between that and what we see here in Acts.  They all were filled with the Spirit, and spotaneously sold, and gave as people around them had the need out of LOVE from the Holy Spirit for God's people.  I believe this kind of communism still happens as individuals give over their whole lives to the Holy Spirit's work, and see the needs of those around them through the eyes of Christ.  It is not a mandated thing, it is a "compelling" thing as The Holy Spirit breaks your heart for the physical, and spiritual neexs of those around you.

COOL!  THOUGHTS???

How enjoyable...

I Love the book of Acts.  This is one of my favorite passages.

"(13)When they saw the courage of Peter and John and realized that they were unschooled, ordinary men, they were astonished and they took note that these men had been with Jesus. 14But since they could see the man who had been healed standing there with them, there was nothing they could say. 15So they ordered them to withdraw from the Sanhedrin and then conferred together. 16"What are we going to do with these men?" they asked. "Everybody living in Jerusalem knows they have done an outstanding miracle, and we cannot deny it. 17But to stop this thing from spreading any further among the people, we must warn these men to speak no longer to anyone in this name."

It was obvious that a miracle had happened.  The middle-aged healed guy was standing right there, and the crowd was praising God!  It was obvious that these "unschooled ordinary men" were exceptional, and the only explanation for either of these things was that "These men had been with Jesus".  It's interesting that even though no other explanation could be found, those in authority, instead of putting their faith in Jesus themselves, and calling out to him "to be saved", they instead schemed how they could continue to keep themselves in politcal power, and snuff out this other-worldly threat to their human hierarchy system.  The governments of the world, both religious and political, will do whatever they can to keep Jesus from wrecking the comfortable situation they have found themselves in.

In what ways do we resist Jesus call in order to keep ourselves in the comfortable situation we find ourselves in, even though we can offer no other explanation for Jesus work?  It would do us well to consider how we can fully respond with our whole lives to the person of Jesus Christ rather than effectively knowing who he is, what he's done, and ignoring the things he said that no one seems to take terribly seriously.  I realize this sounds like a very very general statement, but I have been so challenged by considering the personal cost TO ME of the things Christ said.  He said some really harsh stuff that really draws a line in the sand for the Christian to either walk over, or not.  Sorry if this ended up sounding like a lame devotional...but it just struck me that we resist The Christ sometimes as strongly as these government/religious guys in the Scriptures, and for many of the same reasons.  Mainly, to maintain control of our lives, rather than giving that to God, and going where He calls.  Thoughts???

Matthew 10:39

"Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it." - Jesus

THE "PSALM OF THE CROSS"!

Psalm 22 is called "The Psalm Of The Cross". Though it was written about 1,000 years before Jesus birth, death on the cross, and ressurection, it predicts to the SMALLEST of details what happened on the cross, and is referred to by New Testament writers (Matthew 27:35-36,46; Luke 23:35; John 19:23-28). It even talks about Jesus being pierced in his hands and feet in verse 16! Jesus life, and death on the cross are not just Bible fairy tales, but are also reported in other historical accounts of the time that Christ lived in by noted historians. CHECK THIS WEB-SITE OUT for some condensed examples:  http://www.cfmin.com/xp1/?p=577 . It is truly amazing to me how time and time again in the Old Testament, thousands of years before Jesus, VERY SPECIFIC details of his life are predicted before they happen.  If you want a list of some more of them, post a message and ask me - there are TONS!  Then Jesus came and fullfilled all of these Old Testament passages down to the minutia (including today's reading in Psalm 22), THEN secular, non-Christian historians of Jesus day ALSO document his life and death in detail which corroberates with the prophesies about him found in the Old Testament from thousands of years previous to his life. There is no doubt in my mind that Jesus WAS who he said he was, and ACCOMPLISHED what he said he would on the cross; the REDEMPTION of all who call on him, the FORGIVENESS of sins, and the HEALING of the physical/emotional/spiritual body!!! Amazing!

Good To See You: Today's Reading...

It's good to see some friends on here reading with us!  Here is today's reading.  Click "comments" link below the post the reply to the post and let us know your thoughts.  One thing I'm really enjoying in the daily readings is having a Psalm or a Proverb to read each day.  Reading straight through a book like Psalms or Proverbs makes the text almost undigestable (because of HOW MUCH stuff is in there!!).  It's nice to take the day's Proverb or Psalm and just chew on it for the entire day.  I would even recommend reading, then revisiting it again later.  As we meditate on the Scriptures, the Holy Spirit can really do some amazing stuff in us.  I hope you all have a great day!

Old Testament Reading:  Exodus 21; Exodus 22

Job , book of the Bible. The book is of unknown authorship and date, although many scholars assign it to a time between 600 BC and 400 BC A lament in narrative form, the subject is the problem of good and evil in the world: "Why do the just suffer and the wicked flourish?" In the prose prologue Satan obtains God's permission to test the unsuspecting Job, whom God regards as "a perfect and an upright man" ; accordingly, all that Job has is destroyed, and he is physically afflicted. The main part of the book is cast in poetic form and consists of speeches by Job and three friends who come to "comfort" him: Job speaks, then each of the three speaks in turn, with Job replying each time; there are three such cycles of discussion, although the third is incomplete. The friends insist alike that Job cannot really be just, as he claims to be, otherwise he would not be suffering as he is. Nevertheless, Job reiterates his innocence of wrong. The sequence changes with the appearance of a fourth speaker, Elihu, who accuses Job of arrogant pride. He in turn is followed by God himself, who speaks out of a storm to convince Job of his ignorance and rebuke him for his questioning. The prose epilogue tells how God rebukes the three friends for their accusations and how happiness is restored to Job. The author did not intend to solve the paradox of the righteous person's suffering, but rather to criticize a philosophy that located the cause of suffering in some supposed moral failure of the sufferer. The texts are imperfect, and there may be serious losses, misplacements, or even additions to the original. The book contains many eloquent passages; among them are Job's declaration of faith in the "redeemer," his speech on wisdom, and God's discourse on animals. Job is mentioned elsewhere in the Bible.

BAM! That just happened...NATTY(D)...

Hello New Life Fellowship! My hope is that we can once in a while share our thoughts on the various Scriptures we read as we read through the Bible in a year together! We are starting the reading on Monday, 01/25/10. Please go to:

http://www.biblica.com/bibles/dailyreading/index.php?drdate=20100112&translation_select=NIV&month=01&year=2010&day=12

...to see what reading we're on. We're starting mid-stream, as I'm sure the majority of us have started this process once or twice, and given up. Lets make this ther year we get through the whole book, cover to cover! So, our first day is 01/25/10:

Genesis 49-50
Matthew 17:14-18:9
Psalm 15:1-5

If you'd like to catch up, go ahead, just don't fall behind!

I have a feeling you have all read Genesis 100+ times, so starting late isn't such a bad thing, as long as we commit to finish this thing together! If anything, I'd recommend reading Matthew 1-18 to catch up on that story.

I am passionate about reading and discussing Scripture! Please post your thoughts on this BLOG, and we can all talk together. I know this excercise will build us all up in a profound way! The Holy Spirit reminds us of what God has said. Lets put this stuff in our heads for His glory and work in our lives and ministries!
