Sunday's reading, my takeaway...
ReplyDeleteNUMBERS 1 & 2
It's interesting to note that the tribe of Judah has the most warriors and is ordered to go first (in battle I assume). Is this a precursor for David's time? Jesus descended from David's lineage. It's interesting to see how they were given significance during Moses time as well.
Sometimes God seems harsh like when he orders lay people put to death for coming near the tabernacle. Only the Levites were allowed. It's a tough pill to swallow but He makes the rules. It's like when He struck down Uzzah for touching the arc after it almost fell off the ox cart during David's time. Even David was upset. I guess we need to adhere to Gods rules without question or human interpretation.
LUKE
I got two things out of this. 1) Nothing is impossible with God as spoken by Gabriel. Jesus said this as well. 2) Mary did what she was told without question indicating blind faith. Imagine explaining this to Joseph? His faith was solid as well. No wonder they were chosen to be Jesus earthly parents.
PSALMS
Salvation is not through might but fear of God and his kindness (grace). My understanding of fear is not to be afraid but to revere and obey. I don't think God wants us hiding under a rock to approach him (at least I hope not).
"Jesus is the image of the invisible God" is what Paul says in Colosians 1:15. Whenever I do not understand something about God (happens often), and cannot reconcile him in some way (as if I had the right)...I look to someone I can know...someone I can touch, see, feel, smell. Someone who is human like me who I can understand...THAT is Jesus Christ. God showed exactly who he was in Christ - a translation lens for us humans. Christ is what God would be like as a human (or rather what God looks like as Jesus who IS God), a walking translation for us to see, with our 5 senses, what God is like. There are many things I cannot comprehend about God in Scripture that I chalk up to the "finite" trying to perceive the "in-finite". When that happens, I look to Jesus, and all of the affection, understanding, and love that I feel for him, I project THAT onto God. Jesus IS God. He is the perfect image of the invisible God. Jesus is God we can perceive with our senses. I always go back to Jesus. What a great mercy God has done us in sending his son, not just for salvation, but for revelation we can swallow with our frail human selves! How kind of God to send us Jesus. We will never fully perceive God, but we can know Him intimately through his Son. That is amazing mercy. What a great God we serve. People have misunderstood God for years, and built "humanly" not "Godly" theologies based on this misunderstanding. We must look to Jesus to set us straight. We must seek the Helper of Jesus Spirit who he has sent us. Remember, he promised not to leave us as orphans, but to come to us and teach us, and remind us, and lead us!
